Chiropractic for Babies
Chiropractic? For babies? Heck yes!!
Naturally, the number one question when it comes to pediatric chiropractic is: Is it safe? Yes, pediatric chiropractic is safe, gentle, and EFFECTIVE if you are taking your baby to a chiropractor with knowledge and experience. I always tell parents, whether you choose to bring your baby to me or someone else, make sure they are adjusting babies on a regular basis. Can other chiropractors treat infants? Sure, but if the majority of their patient base is athletes with knee pain, do you really want them adjusting your sweet bundle of joy? Chiropractic is an art that’s highly reliant on muscle memory. Having the tactile ability to pick up on your baby’s cues is very important. I have experience with babies as early as a few days old all the way through teenage years.
The second question people always ask is: Are you “cracking” babies? Seriously, no. Adjusting babies looks more like sustained contact with a finger pad, gentle vibration, some light massage, and gentle stretching. You may not even be able to tell that they’re being adjusted because it looks nothing like adult chiropractic. The pressure being applied is similar to testing a tomato or avocado for ripeness at the grocery store.
So, why would someone bring their baby in to see me? Many reasons: constipation, colic, head or side preference, feeding difficulties, gas discomfort, torticollis, delayed milestones, body work before/after tongue tie release, recurrent illnesses and ear infections, they seem tight or have trouble relaxing/unwinding. Trust me, as a parent, I’ve been there. It’s 3am, your baby is uncomfortable, and you’d give anything to help them feel better but you’ve tried EVERYTHING. Then, you go to your pediatrician and they tell you it’s normal, your baby is fine, but you have a gut feeling that there’s something else going on. No hate toward pediatricians, they’re looking for glaring red flags and it’s a good thing that they didn’t see any. That’s typically when I meet families, though, and we talk about tension, birth, feeding, and leave no stone unturned. Seeing hope return to a mom’s face and putting her at ease about trusting her gut? Priceless.
